VSC714 Advanced Clinical Research Internship (16)

Abstract

The aim of this subject is to develop clinical research skills relevant to professional clinical practice. This will include development of advanced clinical knowledge relevant to clinical research questions, research methodologies, problem-solving skills and reflective skills allowing critical appraisal of existing and new research knowledge relevant to the discipline. Candidates will concurrently undertake veterinary clinical training while undertaking this subject allowing development of clinical research skills, methodologies and data collection and translation of generated knowledge. Candidates will develop communication skills through which clinical research knowledge and critical enquiry is communicated and disseminated to peers and undergraduate veterinary students.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to demonstrate advanced clinical research methodologies and knowledge and enquiry attributes, problem-solving skills and conceptual insights relevant to the discipline and associated clinical research questions
  • Be able to develop and demonstrate cognitive and reflective skills to undertake advanced evaluation of existing and new clinical research knowledge relevant to the professional discipline
  • Be able to develop and demonstrate effective communication skills to explain and critique theory, methodologies, results and conclusions of existing scientific literature
  • Be able to communicate and disseminate complex clinical research knowledge through veterinary undergraduate didactic teaching, problem-based learning facilitate and clinical teaching
  • Be able to demonstrate independent study and problem solving skills. Take responsibility for personal outcomes

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Undertake placement in an on-campus enterprise which is relevant to the selected discipline
  • Incorporate clinical research finding into the undergraduate veterinary science curriculum on campus
  • Deliver presentations of critical appraisal of literature relevant to the discipline
  • Contribute to clinical discussion seminars
  • Complete a portfolio of teaching and supervisor assessment of teaching

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of more than 30 days duration. The Workplace learning will be undertaken at an on-campus enterprise, which is relevant to the selected discipline. Workplace learning may also be undertaken in on-campus didactic components of undergraduate veterinary science curriculum. The duration of the Workplace Learning will be determined by the candiate and supervisorty team, but will be the equivalent of half a session.
