WEL217 Social Dimensions of Disability (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to social and welfare elements of disability.  It will allow students to develop knowledge of how social processes contribute to the marginalisation of people with disabilities.  It looks at the main models of disability and encourages the student to develop a critical analysis of the models and a conception of disability beyond the models.  It also looks at policy and program development, examines philosophical change, legal frameworks and critical concepts in the disability field.  It also examines institutional factors which mediate disability, notably the emergence of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
