WEL306 Non-Metropolitan Welfare Services (8)

Abstract

Welfare issues of special importance to non-metropolitan communities in Australia are explored in this subject including poverty, rurality, social policy and welfare service delivery in a non-metropolitan context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* have an understanding of the difficulties experienced in defining rural and remote;
* be able to describe various service delivery models;
* be familiar with the differences between providing welfare services to metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas;
* be able to appreciate that policy impacts upon the rural environment in ways that may not always be apparent to urban-based policy makers;
* have an understanding of the major issues faced by a number of rural groups or communities, for example: rural poverty and disadvantage, farm families, rural unemployment, rural elderly, women and rural youth;
* more effectively and efficiently apply themselves to the position should they be employed as a rural human services worker.

The subject will cover the following topics:
The concept of rural and Rural Australia The notion of rural urban differences Service delivery models (access and equity) Aged, women, youth, unemployed.
