WEL423 Core counselling skills for human service roles (8)

Abstract

This subject provides the theoretical and practice skills necessary for students who will specialise in health based counselling. It covers ethics, skills and strategies compatible with major theoretical counselling frameworks. It deals with counselling techniques relevant to working with children, couples and families, people with disabilities, or from diverse cultural and ethnic groups. It also identifies the special requirements for working with people at different stages of the life cycle.

Not for students who have completed PSY402 The subject is at fourth year level, which requires  familiarity with academic writing and learning requirements

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to outline and critically discuss key aspects of the underpinnings of counselling skills models
  • demonstrate an appropriate level of self-awareness and capacity to reflect on their own practice skills
  • demonstrate core communication and counselling skills and basic steps towards contextually appropriate relationship development
  • demonstrate an understanding of how to appropriately apply core communication and counselling skills in different phases of human service relationships

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Key aspects of background counselling theory
  • The skill of communicating
  • Setting up the helping relationship
  • Developing the helping relationship
  • Working with the relationship
  • The established relationship and its maintenance
  • Deepening your knowledge base and understanding
  • Becoming a reflexive practitioner

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. Case -based learning methods to strengthen basic counselling skills and application.
