APS501 Advanced Cardiac Care (8)

This subject provides students with the theoretical knowledge and understanding of cardiac conditions as applicable to intensive care paramedics. The subject reviews cardiac anatomy, physiology and pharmacology as applicable to advanced cardiac care. Emphasis is placed on obtaining a high level of understanding of the pathophysiology of cardiac conditions. Evidence based theories of cardiac management strategies will be used to develop students' skills in leadership and management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to evaluate the pathophysiology and aetiology (characteristics and consequences) of acute cardiovascular emergencies to the management of cardiac care in the paramedic setting.
  • Be able to critically analyse the current management guidelines of cardiovascular emergencies and develop evidence based treatment plans at an advanced critical care level.
  • Be able to identify, synthesise, analyse and critically evaluate complex data from patient and technologically-derived sources (e.g. point of care) to inform decision making about clinical care.
  • Be able to demonstrate safe and competent management and advanced critical care skills for cardiac arrests of non-traumatic origin in accordance with evidence based practice and current guidelines .
  • Be able to explain theories of leadership in cardiac care and demonstrate autonomy, judgement and accountability.
