APS507 Systematic Extended Care (8)

This subject provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of pathophysiology, patient assessment and treatment options for musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological conditions. The subject addresses these topics with a focus on primary health care patient assessment, treatment, case management and identification of transport, referral or field care options.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to apply knowledge of the underlying pathophysiological processes to musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurological conditions with reference to the specific anatomical and physiological differences for each.
  • Be able to critically evaluate evidence based practices, interventions and management relating to the care of musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurological conditions for extended care paramedics.
  • Be able to apply a knowledge of pharmacology, including specific pharmacological considerations for musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurological conditions to the selection and administration of medications.
  • Be able to develop evidenced based strategies/management plans for obstetric emergencies and for musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurological conditions for extended care paramedics.
  • Be able to identify the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and be able to identify patients who present with cardiac presentations who are suitable for extended care management.
