APS509 Extended Care Skills (8)

This subject is designed to provide for students in the Extended Care stream of the Master of Paramedicine to make a successful transition to the role of an Extended Care Paramedic, or equivalent. The subject will build on their previous paramedic qualifications and experience to focus their clinical practice on the extended care skills implemented by advanced paramedics. Students will have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice under supervision in controlled environments, including high fidelity clinical simulation. This subject includes a 5-day residential school where students will become familiar with advanced extended care equipment and clinical practice guidelines, prior to clinical placement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to describe and demonstrate situational awareness, scene safety, and effective communication with allied health care professionals.
  • Be able to critically evaluate and implement extended care management of trauma and medical presentations in a variety of settings.
  • Be able to implement and justify problem solving and clinical decision making skills that allow them to identify, analyse and apply appropriate approaches to new problems.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to complete advanced extended care paramedic skills.
  • Be able to demonstrate clinical competence of extended care paramedic skills in a simulated environment.
  • Be able to critically analyse and apply debriefing and reflection in clinical practice.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Patient assessment.
  • Musculoskeletal system.
  • Anesthesia and procedural sedation.
  • Wound care management.
  • Point of care tests.
  • Catheterisation and gastrostomy tubes.
  • Clinical leadership.

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

This subject is designed to provide for students in the Critical Care stream of the Master of Paramedicine to make a successful transition to the role of an Intensive Care Paramedic, or equivalent.  This subject includes a 5-day residential school where students will become familiar with advanced critical care equipment, the specialised skills needed for treating extended care patients and the guidelines for clinical practice prior to clinical placement.
