ASC171 Animal Anatomy and Physiology (8)

Animal anatomy and physiology introduces students to the principles of mammalian physiology and applied anatomy as it relates to animals, in particular to production animals.  The integration and control of all major organ systems, including endocrine, nervous, musculoskeletal, digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and immune systems will be studied, from the microanatomical level, through to gross anatomy and normal physiology.  In addition, students will also cover the importance of blood, cellular communication and the principles of thermoregulation.   Central to this subject is the focus on homeostasis and the linkages between each of the organ systems in maintaining homeostasis.  Examples from a variety of domesticated, production animals are used to demonstrate and assimilate concepts in lectures and practical classes.

This subject has a 4 day residential school for those students enrolled via distance education. During the residential school students will undertake all of the practical classes that are taught to the internal students as well as supporting lectures and tutorials.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to compare and contrast the normal anatomy and physiology of the major organs and systems of various species including mammals and birds.
  • be able to relate the anatomy and physiology of these animals to the maintenance of homeostasis
  • be able to relate the anatomy and physiology of these animals to their lifestyles and environments
  • be able to communicate, both orally and in writing, in the specialised language of anatomy and physiology
  • be able to identify important anatomical and physiological features of the various major organ systems

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1A: The language of animal anatomy and physiology
  • Module 1B: Cells, homeostasis, body water and cellular communication
  • Module 2: Endocrine system anatomy and physiology
  • Module 3: Nervous system anatomy and physiology
  • Module 4: Muscle anatomy and physiology
  • Module 5: Skeletal system, joints and bone metabolism
  • Module 6: Digestive system anatomy and physiology (with a production animal focus)
  • Module 7: Heart and cardiovascular system anatomy and physiology
  • Module 8: Blood and its functions (including fluid movement, cell types, clotting and blood groups)
  • Module 9: Body protection systems, with a focus on the immune system and the skin
  • Module 10: Respiratory system anatomy and physiology
  • Module 11: Principles of thermoregulation
  • Module 12: Renal system anatomy and physiology

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

Attendance at a residential school enables students to develop competence in a number of laboratory skills, as well as encouraging face to face discussion amongst their peers and staff, and thereby ensuring that they have access to both scientific enquiry and knowledge, and the opportunity to develop through the social aspects of learning, that face to face interaction can provide.

Special Resources

This subject has a 4 day residential school for those students enrolled via distance education. To ensure the learning experiences for all students enrolled in ASC171, either internally or via distance education, are the same  the 4 day residential school includes all of the practical classes that are taught to the internal students as well as supporting lectures and tutorials.
