BMS301 Medical Science Special Topic (8)

This subject considers issues that may confront a graduate medical scientist. Topics covered include methods of information retrieval from published literature and report writing. A literature survey on a selected topic from medical science will be presented both as a written report, a poster and an oral seminar.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • appreciate the organisation and structure of the scientific literature;
  • be able to apply knowledge of medical science information sources to literature searching;
  • be able to collect, collate and critically review information on a specific topic;
  • be able to apply scientific conventions commonly used both in the presentation of an oral seminar, a scientific poster and in a written report;
  • be able to describe in depth a specific area of medical science through the medium of the literature review.

This subject will cover the following topics:

The syllabus will cover the following topics: * information sources in medical science; abstracting journals, computer data bases, use of original articles and of reviews; * scientific writing and verbal presentation of information; * a substantial review of the scientific literature on a selected topic of medical science, presented both in written form, a poster and as an oral seminar.
