This subject will contain an in depth study of the fields of bioinformatics and proteomics. A major part of the subject will deal with the relationship between genomes (or genomics) and cellular functions. Proteomics and bioinformatics are essential tools to analyse this relationship.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Understand genome sequencing and data analysis
  • Appreciate the role of the Human genome project
  • Understand the variations in genomes from different species
  • Describe and understand DNA array technology and its difficulties
  • Understand the difficulties in protein and RNA structure prediction
  • Be able to do independent databank searches for specific DNA sequences
  • Be able to analyse specific DNA sequences using current bioinformatics tools
