BMS523 Applied Immunology (8)

This advanced immunology subject considers aspects of immune function and dysfunction, particularly pathology in the immune system at the cellular and molecular level, as well as how immunological processes and techniques are used in the biotechnology and pharmacological fields. The aim of the subject is to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of immunology in the context of immune mediated diseases and the application of immunological principles in the development of new drugs, vaccines and medical and veterinary diagnostic tests.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain immune function and dysfunction at the cellular and molecular level.
  • be able to explain the pathology of the immune system with particular reference to immunodeficiency diseases, hypersensitivity reactions, malignancies and autoimmune diseases and current approaches to diagnostic tests for and treatments of these conditions
  • be able to explain with examples how principles of immunology have been applied to the development of new drugs, vaccines and diagnostic techniques
  • be able to evaluate the relevance of currently available immunological techniques capable of being employed in modern biomedical science
  • be able to critically interpret published data relating to research in immunology
  • be able to integrate information from a range of published sources and use this to synthesise their own ideas in immunology in relation to the development of new pharmacotherapies, vaccines and medical and veterinary diagnostic tests.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Molecules and receptors involved in immune function and dysfunction.
  • The pathophysiology of important diseases of the immune system and current approaches to diagnosis and treatment
  • The application of key immunological concepts in the development of various assays used in medical and veterinary laboratories
  • Applications of immunological concepts in the development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tests.
