This subject aims to enable students to develop their critical understanding of, and confidence in, the English language for use in a wide range of formal and informal situations. The subject will develop students' grammatical accuracy in both writing and speaking; ability to predict and understand written and spoken texts; and understanding of the conventions of academic writing. Students will implement reading strategies; research, select and synthesise information; learn to think critically; and discuss and present information in a convincing and persuasive way on academic topics. The subject also introduces fundamental study skills to prepare students for the rigours of study at the higher education level.
