The philosophy of the analytical method is introduced via a study of commonly used analytical techniques. The latter include chromatographic, spectroscopic and electrochemical procedures. Classical wet chemical methods are reviewed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have an appreciation of the general philosophy of the analytical approach to qualitative and quantitative analysis including the need for accuracy and precision;
  • be able to perform basic gravimetric, volumetric, chromatographic, electrochemical and spectroscopic calculations;
  • have knowledge of a range of common wet chemical and instrumental techniques used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

Terminology of analytical chemistry (accuracy, precision, sensitivity, detection limit, selectivity, specificity, etc); The analytical method; Comparison of analytical techniques; Electrochemical analysis; Chromatographic analysis; Spectroscopic analysis.

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.
