This subject provides a theoretical and practical overview of the major illnesses affecting Indigenous Australians today, the conditions under which they prevail and how these illnesses can be identified and treated.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • list and describe the major illnesses being experienced by Indigenous Australians today
  • demonstrate an understanding of the relation between lifestyle and the general state of Aboriginal health, particularly in relation to: cardiac disease; pulmonary disease; diabetes
  • sexually transmitted diseases; renal disease; mental health; skin disorders
  • analyse research studies relating to Aboriginal health status
  • carry out a minor research study into an aspect of Aboriginal health

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

* Concepts of illness, health and wellbeing from an Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal perspective. * Classifications of illnesses. * Major illnesses affecting Indigenous Australians - history. * Lifestyle effects on health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians. * Identification and treatment of major illnesses affecting Indigenous Australians. * Types of research into Aboriginal health. * Shortcomings of research. * Developing, carrying out and reporting research.

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.
