This subject is designed to prepare the student to practice as a professional health worker. Issues pertinent to the development of the health working profession are discussed such as registration for health workers, National competency standards, research and professional affiliations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Practice professional health work that is culturally safe, holistic and which maintains personal and client integrity
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and societies, caucasian and
  • multicultural populations and the health problems particular to this group of people
  • Demonstrate an ability to integrate knowledge from previous subjects thus ensuring holistic practice
  • Discuss the National Aboriginal Health Worker Competency
  • Standards as they relate to a beginning practitioner
  • Discuss issues for health workers related to professional registration and affiliations.
  • Demonstrate an ability to utilise principles of reflective practice to address selflearning needs
  • Utilise the skills of leadership to demonstrate management,supervisory and group forming and maintaining skills
  • Recognise the importance of their role as responsible, accountable and professional health practitioners
  • Acquire strategies for effective time management
  • Discuss trends in the Australian society which may impact on their role as health care professionals
  • Utilise collaborative and leadership skills to function effectively as part of a health care team
  • Critically evaluate research pertaining to their learning needs within an identified area of nursing practice
  • Demonstrate and ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for clients

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

* clinical decision making, priority setting and clinical judgement * strategies to manage time and workload * the graduate practice context * registration of the Indigenous Health workforce * National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Competency Standards * management strategies, supervisory skills, team building and enhancement skills, staff allocation * client and staff assessment and the ability to give appropriate feedback * advanced documentation * professional organisations and career development * integration of cultural sensitivity into nursing practice

Residential School

This subject contains a 10 day Compulsory Residential School.

Residentials will provide students with intensive support with lectures and tutorials providing the students with enough support to achieve satisfactory subject performance outcomes.
