COM422 Communication Styles in Multiplatform Media (8)

This subject offers theoretical and applied learning in the preparation of communication tactics in multiplatform media environments. The subject develops students' ability to understand the multiplatform media environment and the range of communication styles adopted in this environment. Students plan, design and propose a media campaign for this multiplatform environment. The subject is designed for delivery to an industry partner so students apply the learning and communication proposition to their own industry situation. The subject is offered via an online program with a one week face to face intensive (residential) workshop program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to understand the multiplatform media environment
  • be able to propose relevant communication tactics as appropriate to multiplatform media campaigns
  • be able to demonstrate specialised knowledge of approaches to designing communication for multiplatform media
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate the effectiveness of specific communication styles and tactics in multplatform campaigns

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • the contemporary media landscape
  • understanding today's multiplatform environment
  • understanding audience in the cross-platform media landscape
  • the impact of convergence, digital and social media trends on the media industry
  • writing for a range of communication interactions
  • managing content for a multiplatform media environment
  • planning, executing, evaluating and managing communication tactics
  • the role of communication in selling media

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school provides participants with intensive instruction and training in a collaborative environment. The  residential activities are designed to reinforce learning introduced in the online program and provides intense scaffolding for the project-based outcome of the subject. Students undertake these activities in authentic on-campus environments in a workshop-style program that utilises intense student/teaching staff interaction and guidance.
