DOH203 Community Oral Health 2 (8)

Based on the knowledge introduced in first year, students will develop a deeper knowledge of the determinants of oral health and how effective oral health promotion is implemented in the clinical and regional community settings. Implementation of oral health promotion strategies are required, with justification for the processes undertaken. Stages of oral health promotion will be investigated at a deeper level, with an emphasis on reducing oral health inequities in rural and remote settings. Key concepts of public oral health policy will be further established with a particular focus on Indigenous oral health. Students will expand their knowledge of key concepts in models of health behaviour and learn how to apply these in a clinical and community setting, developing the skills to be effective in improving individual and community oral health outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply models of health behaviour: protection motivation theory, the health belief model, and the theory of planned behaviour
  • be developing reflective practise skills when applying behaviour change models in patient clinics
  • be able to assess where psychological methods of behaviour change are relevant and be able to apply suitable approach when dealing with an oral health patient
  • be able to define key concepts of public oral health policy development and implementation
  • be able to apply key concepts in indigenous perspectives of health and demonstrated application of these in promoting oral health and improving inequalities in health outcomes
  • be able to demonstrate professional behaviour and attitudes at all times in all learning environments
  • be able to describe the significance of evaluating health and how to measure health outcomes, with the ability to re-define the promotion of health

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Application of applying strategies of oral health promotion evaluation from up-to-date literature
  • Continued development of sociological determinants of oral health
  • Barriers to appropriate oral health care
  • Empowerment and construction of health literacy, normative societal factors in health care
  • Psychological concepts in models of behaviour change
  • Oral health advocacy and professional leadership
  • Indigenous concepts in models of behaviour change
  • Reflective practise in oral health therapy practise

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 10 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

A major component of this subject requires students effectively engaging as a group. Some of this work will be implemented in a community setting such as that of an oral health promotion intervention.
