DOH334 Prosthodontics 1 (12)

This subject is designed to introduce students to the management of simple prosthodontic cases. It will cover the clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and management of such cases and provide students with the opportunity to undertake pre-clinical laboratory technique exercises, to develop the practical skills required to construct uncomplicated complete and partial removable dental prostheses and simple single-unit fixed dental prostheses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the clinical parameters involved in the examination, diagnosis and treatment planning of simple prosthodontic cases
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of dental material science applied to prosthodontics
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the clinical and laboratory stages in the construction of uncomplicated complete and partial removable dental prostheses
  • be able to demonstrate laboratory skills in removable prosthodontics and pre-clinical practical simulation skills in the preparation of simple single-unit fixed dental prostheses

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Clinical examination, diagnosis and treatment planning of the simple prosthodontic case
  • Dental material science applied to prosthodontics
  • The clinical and laboratory stages in the construction of simple complete and partial removable dental prostheses
  • The clinical stages in the construction of a single-unit fixed dental prosthesis
  • The laboratory techniques to repair or modify removable dental prostheses
  • The construction of mouthguards
