DOH412 Medicine and Surgery for Dental Practice (4)

In this subject students will cover relevant aspects of the causes, nature and management of diseases of major body systems. This will include relevant discussion of the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, endocrine, hematological, immunological, neurological, renal, dermatological and musculoskeletal systems.  This subject will also include aspects of oral medicine where the oral health and general health nexus will be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge of causes, key clinical features, diagnostic markers and principles of management of diseases of body systems and their impact on oral health
  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge causes, key clinical features, diagnostic markers and principles of management of oral mucosal diseases and their impact on general health
  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge of dental management of medically compromised patient
  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge of general and oral health issues of the Indigenous Australians

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Diseases of the gastrointestinal system including the liver
  • Diseases of the cardiovascular system
  • Diseases of the respiratory system
  • Diseases of the endocrine system
  • Diseases of the immune system
  • Diseases of the central nervous system
  • Diseases of the hematological system
  • Vesiculo-bullous and erosive lesions of the oral mucosa
  • White, red and pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 8 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.
