This subject focuses on the theory and practice underlying French as a Second Language education in the province and is designed to assist teachers in developing positive and inclusive learning experiences for students.  Candidates will have opportunities to reflect, communicate and apply their learning through practical learning experiences. Teachers will enhance their skills by combining their knowledge of child development and learning with their understanding of French as a Second Language to facilitate active student engagement. Many of the teaching / learning activities presented in the subject require candidates to solve problems that are detailed, realistic sophisticated and authentic.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to understand and implement Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum and Ontario Ministry of Education and district school board policies and guidelines;
  • be able to have the theoretical understanding and foundation necessary to design, implement and assess programs for students;
  • be able to create inclusive, equitable and safe learning environments that address the diversity of learners;
  • be able to understand how to accommodate and modify expectations, teaching strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental and/or special needs of students;
  • be able to work collaboratively with inschool personnel, parents/guardians and the community to support French as a Second Language teaching and learning
  • be able to develop personal management and organisational skills required in the delivery of French as a Second Language education;
  • be able to demonstrate an openness and response to innovation and change, and integrating information and communication technology into teaching French as a Second Language;
  • be able to inquire into practice through reflection, active engagement and collaboration; and
  • be able to expand knowledge and skills in assessment and evaluation as they relate to French as a Second Language through the use of appropriate assessment practices.
  • The objectives of the course are aligned with the Ontario College of Teachers Guidelines for French as a Second Language, Part 1. The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession have been embedded in the learning expectations.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

* Understanding the theoretical and legislative underpinnings of French as a Second Language in Ontario
* Understanding the various service delivery models
* Understanding theories of human development in the context of language acquisition
* Understanding theories of second language development and developing an awareness of research
* Understanding of legal and ethical issues and responsibilities related to French as a Second Language
* Demonstrating knowledge of the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents for French as a Second Language
* Understanding the relationship between program planning, teaching/learning strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental and/or special needs of students
* Demonstrating understanding of how to accommodate and/or modify expectations, teaching strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental and/or special needs of students
* Identifying and using relevant student and teacher resources and equipment for French as a Second Language teaching and learning
* Analysing classroom practice to ensure opportunities for students to develop commitment to French as a Second Language and an understanding of the importance of the francophone culture in Canada and around the world
* Using relevant and engaging teaching strategies that enable students to make connections between classroom learning and real life experiences
* Understanding how to use available resources to make accommodations and modifications in learning opportunities to meet the needs of all learners
* Using technologies as a teaching and learning tool where appropriate
* Understanding the importance of involving and supporting parents/guardians in student learning in French as a Second Language
