Through this subject, students will extend their knowledge and skills in teaching literacy in a variety of workplace and professional contexts within a theoretical framework. This framework is used to explore, evaluate and critique a range of pedagogic practices and theoretical approaches to literacy and numeracy teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe and critique teaching practices in relation to theoretical models and how these are relevant to the professional and workplace context of the learner;
  • be able to evaluate and critically examine good model(s) of literacy and/or numeracy teaching with reference to theories and your own teaching and learning setting; and
  • be able to develop a theoretical framework for programming and teaching literacy and/or numeracy specific professional groups or workplace learners.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Professional and workplace literacy and numeracy
  • Approaches to adult literacy and numeracy teaching for the professional and workplace context
  • Model(s) of professional and workplace literacy and numeracy teaching
  • Practices in teaching reading and writing for the workplace
  • Practices in teaching numeracy and numerical problem solving for the workplace
