This subject builds on students foundation knowledge of theories of development and learning. Students will apply knowledge of learning to the period of adolescence. The major domains of physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development are used to introduce issues pertaining to puberty, development of intelligence, the adolescent self and identity. Contemporary socio-cultural factors that influence adolescent development are considered, as well as the need and importance to effectively engage with parents/carers. In addition, students explore factors related to academic achievement in high school, including high incidence disorders of adolescence. Implications for learning, especially the use of evidence-based learning strategies, are stressed.
