Major theoretical perspectives of development including cognitive, constructivist, behavioural and ecological theories will be explained and applied to educational contexts. The Implications of theoretical and research-based evidence for pedagogical practice are considered.

Observational and other data-gathering techniques will be applied in an authentic case-study relating to a developmental theory or issue, and findings considered in relation to theory and contemporary child development research. The implications for pedagogical practice based on these understandings and findings will be drawn. Mastery of the subject content will be assessed in a final exam.
