EEL409 Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (8)

This subject provides participants an opportunity to critically reflect upon their role within the context of contemporary perspectives and practices in Learning and Teaching in higher education nationally and internationally. Participants in the subject will be required to identify an issue, challenge or task of particular relevance and importance to their role in higher education and design, develop, and implement a practical solution for it with the help of their peers and mentors, through critical reflection on the scholarship of Learning and Teaching, and the literature on theories and perspectives on learning and teaching..

CSU academic staff may be required to complete this subject to meet probationary requirements.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Describe and analyse their current professional context as it relates to learning and teaching in higher education and consider the wider contexts that shape and inform it;
  • Describe and analyse their learners and their learning context, and define the learning outcomes for their students;
  • Design suitable learning experiences (based on literature on theories and perspectives on learning and teaching) for their students including assessment and feedback strategies and engagement with them in physical and virtual spaces;
  • Develop strategies for evaluating the impacts of teaching on student learning, and utilising the data for improving their teaching practices.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The higher education context (nationally and internationally);
  • Theoretical perspectives and principles of effective, efficient and engaging teaching;
  • Learning experience design, learning spaces;
  • Educational technology affordances for Learning and Teaching;
  • Evaluating of teaching and the student learning experience;
  • Scholarship of teaching and reflection in and on action.
