This subject consists of a detailed analysis of the issues related to exercise testing, prescription and rehabilitation. Since the 1980s, there has been much progress in advancing our understanding of the health related benefits of exercise. It is therefore important to recognise the methods used to test and evaluate fitness and subsequently prescribe specific exercise programs for particular individuals and a range of groups. These groups include those predisposed to cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, cancer, the aged and during pregnancy. Exercise prescription will be studied in relation to the broader context of rehabilitation in order that individuals or specific groups are able to manage a healthy lifestyle within their physical capacities. This subject will also explore the basic concepts related to screening and testing in relation to health and fitness trends; relate the results of testing to conditioning and exercise rehabilitation; and explore the basis for using physical activity in asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals.
