This is the first subject relating to games & sports. The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the theoretical approaches that inform the teaching of games and sports. This subject explicitly addresses the pedagogical theories of Sports Education Theory (SEPEP), Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and Games Sense.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the components and characteristics of different categories of games;
  • be able to employ and critique the theoretical pedagogical approaches for teaching games and sports;
  • be able to develop, plan and facilitate safe, inclusive, engaging and educational learning experiences in games and sports;
  • be able to engage with and construct approaches and criteria for assessing, appraising and appreciating movement in games and sports;
  • be able to support the principles of lifelong physical activity through games and sports.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Direct instruction approaches;
  • Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and the games classification system;
  • TGfU as a pedagogy;
  • TGfU in curriculum;
  • Assessing strategic and tactical thinking in games;
  • Assessing skill and motor learning in games;
  • Objectively assessing physical activity in games;
  • Reporting game performance and learning;
  • Effective TGfU teaching and learning strategies.
