The aim of this subject is to improve student understanding of the knowledge and principles of laboratory and field tests of the multiple components of physical fitness. Such test results are then used to develop training programs to improve physical fitness, exercise performance and/or health and well-being.
This subject includes a compulsory residential school if the subject is undertaken by Distance Education.

Students are to have an understanding of anatomy, physiology and basic strength and conditioning principles prior to undertaking this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to comprehend the diverse content of exercise prescription within the field of exercise physiology;
  • be able to understand how exercise testing and prescription fit into the study and profession of exercise physiology in Australia, as well as in a world context;
  • be able to perform and interpret specific tests of physiological function;
  • be able to understand energy systems of muscle metabolism and how they interact to overall energy demands during different intensities and durations of exercise;
  • be able to design a conditioning program for a specific individual or group;
  • be able to evaluate a prescribed exercise program for a specific individual in relation to their health status and functional capacity;
  • be able to evaluate the risks and associated responsibilities when conducting pre-exercise screening, exercise testing and exercise prescription;
  • be able to understand the differences between physical activity, exercise training and physical fitness;
  • be able to understand the basis of using physical activity/exercise training in the prevention and management of diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction and overview of physical fitness and exercise prescription;
  • Ergometry, energy, work and power;
  • Indirect calorimetry;
  • Understanding exercise energy expenditure and intensity;
  • Pre-exercise screening and risk stratification;
  • Testing cardiorespiratory fitness;
  • Testing body composition;
  • Flexibility, posture, balance and body alignment;
  • The physiology of strength and power;
  • Testing muscular strength and power;
  • Designing training programs.

Residential School

This subject contains a 2 day Compulsory Residential School.

Distance Education students are required to attend a two (2) day Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period.
This Residential School is necessary in order to comply with accreditation requirements and to complete the appropriate volume of learning required in this subject in laboratory and practical settings.

Special Resources

Distance Education students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities. This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
