The primary focus of this subject is to provide the scientific background, knowledge and assessment skills related to the nutritional needs of healthy active people. This subject will address current concepts and controversies relating to both health and sports nutrition by linking information in the fields of exercise science and nutrition. This subject will also explore the role of nutrition in optimising training responses and adaptations, sports performance, health and well-being, and disease prevention in both children and adults.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the relationship between nutrition and the energy demands of the healthy individuals compared to athletes;
  • be able to critique current sports nutrition literature and be able to generate practical advice for healthy persons and athletes;
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate methods for assessing an individual's nutritional needs;
  • be able to describe an appropriate nutritional plan to enhance performance and optimise health;
  • be able to explain the importance of fluid and electrolytes and methods of hydration monitoring;
  • be able to explain the appropriate use of nutritional supplements and ergogenic aids;
  • be able to recognise the varied nutritional needs of individuals with known risk factors for, or presence of, varied lifestyle diseases that are pertinent to most developed countries.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Overview of nutrition: macronutrients, micronutrients, nutritional biochemistry of energy metabolism;
  • Carbohydrate nutrition in exercise performance, health and disease;
  • Fat nutrition in exercise performance, health and disease;
  • Protein nutrition in exercise performance, health and disease;
  • Understanding energy expenditure, dietary intake and obesity;
  • Diet/nutrition assessment strategies;
  • Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and exercise metabolism;
  • Nutritional ergogenic aids and sports ethics;
  • The sports drink myth;
  • Nutrition, health, disease and the NHMRC dietary guidelines for all Australians;
  • Nutritional needs: children vs adults;
  • The future of food in a non-sustainable world.
