EMH205 HSIE: Teaching About People, Places and the Past (8)

This subject provides pre-service teachers with the professional and pedagogical knowledge that will enable them to be graduate standard teachers of primary Human Society and Its Environment. In this subject, students engage with conceptualizations of the HSIE curriculum teaching area and examine how these are represented in mandated syllabuses. Students will develop an understanding of the teaching strategies appropriate to the design, implementation and assessment of high quality HSIE learning experiences. Students will create authentic learning experiences that address issues of community engagement, social justice, sustainability, and diversity.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • articulate a rationale for teaching HSIE in primary classrooms;
  • demonstrate how to plan, structure and sequence learning programs for HSIE;
  • be able to design learning experiences that reflect their knowledge and understanding of the learning and teaching context,and the content of the HSIE syllabus;
  • use a range of resources, including ICT, relevant to the teaching of HSIE;
  • understand the importance of designing authentic, integrated teaching, learning and assessment experiences that promote the values of the HSIE discipline area, along with strategies that effectively evaluate teaching programs;
  • demonstrate skills on how to make meaningful connections between the classroom and the community;
  • incorporate literacy and numeracy strategies in the HSIE teaching area.

  • The rationale and vision of HSIE
  • Planning and programming in HSIE
  • Inquiry based learning in HSIE
  • Project/service/problem and place based learning in HSIE
  • Strategies for teaching and learning in HSIE, including strategies that support the teaching of diversity, intercultural understanding and global perspectives
  • Assessment and evaluation in HSIE
  • Values and controversial issues in HSIE
