EML519 Investigating English Communication 1 (8)

This subject is designed to develop knowledge, skills and strategies for undertaking investigations into topics related to English communication in a range of personal and professional contexts. Students will be introduced to inquiry approaches and will develop and use skills of sourcing, managing, interpreting, and  analysing information in English as they engage with a range of materials and with each other during the subject. They will apply academic reading and writing skills, and relevant technologies, to effectively make meaning with and for others. This subject is designed as a partner subject with EML523.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • understand inquiry approaches to investigating relevant topics in English communication;
  • identify, critique, and respond to topics/issues related to English communication in a range of personal and professional contexts;
  • demonstrate appropriate skills and language for tertiary study at Masters level, including sourcing and synthesising scholarly literature, and planning investigations;
  • use available ICTs and technologies to facilitate and communicate their learning;


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Inquiry approaches to investigating topics and issues.
  • Identifying English communication topics and issues in personal and professional contexts.
  • Using English for critical analysis and reflection.
  • Sourcing and synthesising relevant research and literature.
  • Planning investigations.
  • Presenting and communicating investigation outcomes.
