EML522 English Use in Professional Contexts (8)

This subject introduces key concepts from sociolinguistics and organisational communication as a basis for analysing and understanding English communication and use in professional contexts. Students will analyse professional and organisational communication using functionalist, interpretive and critical approaches. The subject supports the application of these concepts to known and new professional contexts in practical ways in order to develop effective communication skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Use specialised sociolinguistic knowledge to investigate and describe English language use in a range of professional contexts;
  • Analyse and describe the specific language features and demands of diverse professional and organisational contexts;
  • Analyse professional and organisational discourses in a range of contexts;
  • Make high level judgements concerning communication in organisations;
  • Demonstrate appropriate English use for at least one professional context;
  • Articulate the place and effective use of information communication technologies (ICTs) in professional contexts.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Sociolinguistics for describing English language use
  • Organisational communication theory and practice
  • Understanding diverse professional contexts
  • Language and communicative features of professional contexts
  • The role of culture in professional communication
  • Professional discourses and expectations
  • Using technology effectively in professional communication including email and social media such as blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Youtube
