EPT122 Professional Experience 1 Early Childhood Programs: 3-5 Year Olds (8)

This is the first in a series of professional experience subjects, building on the initial experiences in early childhood settings. It includes a 20 day supervised placement in an early childhood setting for children aged from 3 to 5 years. Students will begin to demonstrate the ability to initiate and sustain positive relationships with individual young children, and guide childrens behaviour in positive ways. Students will observe of children's play and use these records as a basis for planned experiences. They will reflect on their experiences and adapt their planning in response to feedback and reflection and work collaboratively with their associate teacher to support childrens learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate skills of linking child development theory to early childhood practices and programs for 3-5 year old children;
  • be able to Show the ability to use reflective practice in their work with children;
  • be able to Show an understanding and have competently employed classroom and behaviour management practices appropriate to children aged 3-5;
  • be able to demonstrate the capacity to create a positive learning environment where children are able to be confident and engaged learners, in alignment with the EYLF framework;
  • be able to Interact with children in positive ways to guide behaviours. Articulate specific strategies for addressing challenging children;
  • be able to demonstrate competence in a range of pedagogical, social and administrative skills commensurate with the professional experience setting.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Strategies for developing relationships with 3-5 year olds
  • Policies and regulations when working with 3-5 year olds
  • Observing, planning and keeping documentation

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.
