This subject contains a 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.
Professional experience placement in a secondary school Technology Faculty of up to 20 days, as required for accreditation.
The principal space for learning in this subject will be the 20 day professional experience placement. This will include time for observation and practice of teaching. Daily support, supervision and guidance will be provided by an associate teacher from the school in which a pre-service teacher has been placed, and a university appointed liaison officer will make periodic contact for further advice and support.
Important preparation will take place before the professional experience addressing at an introductory level critical issues regarding working in schools, and teaching and learning. These include the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, codes of conduct, child protection requirements, anaphylaxis training, classroom management, and lesson planning. Work Health and Safety (WHS) and risk management in the project-based technology teaching environment will also be a focus.
To help bring all of these aspects of teaching and learning together, pre-service teachers will construct a portfolio of evidence in relation to the graduate level Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. This portfolio will continue to be developed as pre-service teachers progress through the degree program, and will serve as a useful base for providing evidence of meeting the proficient teacher standards once they are employed as teachers.
