ESS513 Meeting the Needs of Students with Communication Difficulties (8)

This subject focuses on meeting the needs of students who experience communication difficulties in inclusive settings. This includes understanding the nature of communication difficulties, collaboration with speech and language professionals, assessment, planning and the role of technology.  Frameworks of assessment and intervention practices are applied to case examples of students with communication needs.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the process of communication and communicative competence in an inclusive environment;
  • be able to give an overview of parts of language in terms of: form, content and use;
  • be able to describe the process of language acquisition;
  • be able to describe major language and communication disorders;
  • be able to analyse and evaluate a video-based language sample;
  • be able to identify 5 strengths and 5 needs for a case study student;
  • be able to prioritise programming needs and write behavioural objectives for language development;
  • be able to describe augmentative and alternative forms of communication (AAC) for people with complex needs including those with Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders;
  • be able to select among alternative forms of communication (AAC) for people with complex needs including those with Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders and integrate those technologies with related program priorities;
  • be able to develop an assistive technology report for a student that includes the development of a rationale for the decisions and recommendations embodied in the report;
  • be able to develop methods for collaborating with speech therapists and other professionals who support those with communication impairment in order to implement suggested interventions within the classroom ecology; and,
  • be able to learn about complex language and communication needs associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders and brain injury. This learning will be reflected in the development of an assistive technology report which is an assessment requirement for the subject.
