ETL402 Literature Across the Curriculum (8)

This subject focuses on the role of the teacher librarian and the use of literature in education, particularly in enhancing student learning outcomes, long-term reading motivation and life-long learning. The subject examines important theory and research related to literature; the diversity of literature and multi-literate environments; and the impact of social and cultural influences on literature. This knowledge will be used to inform the creation of literature and reading experiences across the curriculum to demonstrate how school library services can enhance literature practices in the school community.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to evaluate a wide variety of literature, and apply such knowledge to the selection, appreciationand critical evaluation of literature in education;
  • be able to analyse theory, research and models related to literature, and interpret the implications for education;
  • be able to appreciate the role of multi-literacies, including visual literacy, in the context of literature in education;
  • be able to predict and interpret social and cultural issues as they apply to the use of literature in education;
  • be able to identify how digital environments diversify school student experiences with literature; and
  • be able to extend the role of the teacher librarian in promoting literature across the curriculum.
