ETL507 Professional Experience and Portfolio (8)

This subject comprises the supervised workplace experiences within the Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship) course and the completion of the reflective portfolio.  The subject will develop an understanding of the nature of professional learning in teacher librarianship and assist students to assemble and analyse evidence of their own learning and professional development through a portfolio approach. Students will then collect and reflect on their learning through selected assignments throughout the course, as well as their study visits and placements. This is the capstone subject of the course, and should be undertaken by students after completing all or most of the other subjects in the course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the wider library/information community of which school libraries are a part;
  • have developed an understanding of common professional goals and practices;
  • be able to evaluate the role and functionality of a library or information agency;
  • be able to apply theory to practice in a reflective manner;
  • be able to engage in dialogue with fellow information professionals;
  • have a greater understanding of professional learning and reflective practice; and
  • have extended expertise in developing a reflective portfolio.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Ten day placement undertaking professional level duties in an approved public or special library, or information agency
  • Four day study visit, or equivalent, designed to demonstrate the diversity of professional practice through visits to a range of libraries and information agencies
  • Commitment to life-long learning and the establishment of personal learning networks
  • Development of strategies for ongoing professional learning
  • Preparation of a reflective portfolio.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 10 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.
