FIN381 International Banking and Finance (8)

This subject will introduce students to important finance concepts within an investment banking context.  The unit will combine key theoretical constructs with practical industry expertise and protocols used by global investment banks and financial advisory firms.  It will therefore equip students with important knowledge and skills required to work in these sectors. 
Several transaction types will be covered in the subject including cross-border merger and acquisitions (M&A), private equity, initial public offerings (IPOs), corporate bond issuances and leveraged buy-outs (LBOs).  For each of these transaction types, key processes will be outlined along with important strategic and finance concepts associated with them.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe and differentiate between the products and services provided by investment banks, particularly key types of transactions falling within the Corporate Advisory role investment banks perform;
  • be able to identify, describe and evaluate the processes and key factors driving and impacting on different types of capital raising transactions performed by investment banks;
  • be able to identify and describe the essential items required to prepare documentation associated with capital raising transactions performed by investment banks;
  • be able to explain, evaluate and apply company valuation techniques utilised by investment banks when mandated to advise on different types of capital raising transactions; and
  • be able to explain and critically analyse the role and contribution of investment banks to international financial events and crises.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • introduction: products, services and activities conducted by investment banks;
  • company valuation techniques utilized by investment banks;
  • corporate bond insurances;
  • private equity (PE) transactions;
  • initial public offerings (IPOs);
  • leveraged buy-outs (LBOs);
  • cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions;
  • investment banking: trends and challenges.
