HCS410 Legal Issues in Child and Adolescent Welfare (8)

This subject aims to provide a critical analysis of a range of laws concerned with the care, protection and welfare of children and adolescents. Topics include legal rights, protection and status of children, custody and access, family violence, children in need of care and protection, and adoption. Comparative current law and policy in Australia and overseas will also be considered as well as a brief examination of laws relating to income support for children and adolescents living away from home.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the scope and breadth of laws concerned with the care and protection of children and adolescents, including law in the area of family violence;
  • be able to demonstrate detailed understanding of the law in relation to promoting and protecting the rights and needs of children and adolescents; and
  • be able to demonstrate awareness of of deficiencies in the law and have some knowledge of the processes of, and trends in, law reform.
