HRM534 Contemporary Issues in HRM (8)

HRM534 is the capstone subject for the Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Master in Human Resource Management. It provides students with opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills developed during their degree. The subject reflects on the inconsistencies and ambiguities of HRM policies, the aspiration to measure outcomes, ethics in HRM and its relationship to sustainability. It also features a number of topics common to the modern, dynamic workplace including international and national factors, globalisation, uncertainty, and terrorist threats.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically analyse and research a range of contemporary HRM issues facing today's organisations and evaluate their relative impact on business performance;
  • be able to demonstrate critical problem solving skills by identifying emerging HR trends and discuss how they could effectively be managed;
  • be able to apply industry specific best-practice frameworks and processes in developing HR policies, procedures and recommendations in response to emergent issues;
  • be able to work autonomously and in teams, and use a variety of tools including peer and self-assessment to synthesise information for stakeholders; and
  • be able to develop business case/reports by appraising, evaluating, and prioritising HR issues and their possible implications.

  • Outsourcing, project management and temporary workers
  • Building firm capabilities
  • Future direction-uncertainty - the reflective practitioner
  • Terrorism and HRM
