Students will learn about developing a successful strategy for change underpinned by a critical application of leadership theory. Students will complete a range of work based assessments which will involve investigating ways to better lead change processes.This subject is part of a capstone coursework elective stream following the eight core subjects comprising the Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management.

Assumed Knowledge

HSM412 is one of three subjects comprising a coursework elective stream designed to be taken as a capstone experience in the Master of Health Service Management. It is assumed that students will have completed all core subjects in the Master of Health services Management prior to enrolling in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the current goals and objectives of the services they are responsible for, and have some influence over, that present a leadership challenge
  • be able to develop and justify appropriate stretch objectives for service improvement
  • be able to justify and apply a theoretical framework of leadership for service delivery challenges
  • be able to justify and apply an appropriate ethical framework to a strategy for change
  • be able to apply a critical consideration of safety and quality perspectives to a strategy for change
  • be able to analyse and evaluate competing perspectives on a strategy for change
  • be able to create a communication strategy to engage with key stakeholders on a strategy for change
  • be able to reflect on the process of leading for the change strategy developed
  • be able to undertake research activities consistent with the use of research questions, justify the methodology applied to data identification, collection and analysis, discuss the significant findings and make recommendations based on the evidence presented.

  • Understanding the concept of strategy related to leadership and management in health services
  • Developing a multi-perspective approach to evidence based management
