This subject uses literary sources to study English social history in the period 1914-1939. War memoirs, bestsellers, detective stories, and novels of recognised literary merit are examined for social insights.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate and understanding of the social history of England c. 19141939.
  • be able to develop critical skills in evaluating different types of historical evidence, and in using evidence in presenting logically ordered arguments.

This subject will cover the following topics:

-Methodology -The War and its Aftermath -Generational Relations in the 1920s -Economic and Political Problems in Inter-War England -Crime and Society -Class Relations in the 1930s -Character of the Period
