INF463 Introduction to Data Tools and Analytics (8)

This subject will provide students with the contextual, professional, scholarly and technological foundations of the body of knowledge underpinning the Data Management analytics discipline and professions. Professional settings within organisations in which existing data sets (including big data, research data, enterprise data) reside and are analysed will be discussed. Research, current issues, and examples of practical application in the field of data analytics and technologies relevant to the Information Studies field will be introduced. The subject will orient students to the current data handling and management trends and technology, and help them learn how to select and manage the right tools and analytical applications in their work settings.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate how data, including enterprise, research and 'big' data are collected and managed within organisations;
  • be able to investigate and critically analyse the literature regarding data in information agencies in their social, cultural, economic, ethical and technological contexts;
  • be able to compare and contrast how libraries and information agencies fit into constantly evolving data management technology and infrastructure contexts;
  • be able to understand complex concepts and the role of IT and analytics in relation to the management of data in information processing; and
  • be able to identify and critically assess and apply appropriate data tools and analytics.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Overview of data settings in information agencies
  • The situational, human, and cultural settings in data intensive organisations
  • Information technology fundamentals related to data management
  • The data users, infrastructure and architecture
  • Data analysing tools and techniques.
  • Analytics for data-based decision making
