This subject provides a survey of English literature from medieval times to the mid-seventeenth century. Emphasis will be given to the social and cultural contexts, and the literature will be examined through a study of particular texts.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to engage with the literature from medieval times to the mid-seventeenth century.
  • be able to explain the relationship of literary texts to their historical and socio-political context.
  • be able to recognise and describe the forms and features of literary texts and genres.
  • be able to apply critical reading skills to develop written responses to literary texts.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

- Critical analysis of selected works in English literature from Medieval times to the mid-Seventeenth century
- Introduction to the study of literary history
- Introduction to practices of commentary and analysis that constitute traditional literary criticism
