MGT173 Understanding Organisations and Management (8)

This subject examines the philosophy and role of management within organisations. The various aspects and functions of management are analysed so that students can apply management principles and practices within both public and private sector organisations. Main topics are planning, organising, leading and controlling, as well as management theory, ethics and social responsibility, organisational culture and managing change.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of expectations of university study by exhibiting appropriate levels of literacy skills and academic writing in addition to competence in the use of an online learning environment;
  • be able to research and compare various sources of information about management;
  • be able to compare and contrast the work of influential management thinkers and researchers;
  • be able to explain their personal values and experience in relation to management theory;
  • be able to express opinions on management issues with clarity, from both personal and more objective positions that are backed up with sound evidence and analysis; and
  • be able to apply management theory in order to analyse management dilemmas and problems, and provide recommendations for action.
