Quality Management & Innovation frameworks and techniques are used in many industries to enhanced business performance. This subject aims to introduce students to the historical theories and contemporary approaches to quality management and innovation practice. The subject encourages students to critically reflect on quality management practice with a focus on customers, organisational strategy, leadership impacts and human resource management initiatives. The students critically examine several quality management theories and models including quality control systems, continuous improvement, product and process innovation, the management of knowledge for innovation, teamwork systems and organisational restructuring for innovation and quality management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to compare and contrast theories of Quality Management and innovation and evaluate their relevance for contemporary organisations
  • be able to analyse the importance of customer focussed innovation for improving the competitive position of an organisation
  • be able to evaluate the role of leadership, strategy and HRM approaches in fostering organisational commitment to a culture of quality innovation and improvement;
  • be able to reflect on the implementation of Quality Management systems within an organisation; and
  • be able to devise appropriate solutions for Quality Management implementation issues in particular organisations.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Quality Management, innovation and quality assurance;
  • Historical development of Quality Management;
  • Contemporary issues in Quality Management and innovation (e.g. changes caused by social media, online business platforms etc);
  • Role of leadership, strategy and HRM in developing a culture of quality innovation and improvement;
  • Motivating employee participation in quality improvement activities;
  • Focus on customers for quality improvement and innovation;
  • Techniques for quality management and innovation: Six Sigma, continuous improvement and statistical process control;
  • Performance analytics and strategic information; and
  • Using business analytics and strategic information for quality improvement.
