Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • explain and assess the basic design and practical working conditions of the instruments covered in this subject.
  • critically assess the capabilities, specifications and descriptions used in characterising instruments covered by this subject.
  • critically assess and be aware of the safe working conditions of each type of instrument in regard to radiation protection, electromechanical safety and in regard to appropriate regulations, guidelines or standards.
  • understand and implement and assess basic quality assurance tests and programs for each of the instruments covered in the subject.
  • interpret and critically appraise technical reports all research materials concerning the instruments covered in this subject.

This subject will cover the following topics:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Physical basis of MRI Principles of MRI; T1, T2 and Proton density; 2D and 3D routines; Pulse Sequences: Spin echo, Inversion recovery and introduction to gradient echo and Fast Spin Echo; Spatial encoding; K Space Scanning Instrumentation Suite design Safety Quality Assurance Photorecording Instruments used with MRI Multiformat camera Laser Imaging Alternative Imaging Media Digital Radiography Physical basis of digital radiography Scanning Instrumentation Quality Assurance
