This subject covers the advanced concepts and applications of digital technology in imaging applications in the field of Medical Radiation Science (MRS). It extensively considers digital imaging instrumentation, processing, analysis, review, distribution and associated developments in MRS.
It also covers digital technology aspects in specialised fields within MRS such as in mammography, CR / DR, CT, MRI and NM.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the advanced concepts and applications of digital technology in imaging applications in MRS
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of digital image processing (DIP) methods such as: spatial domain processing, frequency domain processing, other image transforms, 3D image processes, co-registration, image segmentation, feature extraction
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of which DIP processes are used in relevant specialised fields within MRS
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of image management
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of image display devices
  • be able to review and synthesise appropriate literature and relate medical radiations interdisciplinary learning to the broader healthcare sector
  • be able to demonstrate how to apply national and international research findings to the clinical setting.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Revision of basic digital images and DIP principles,
  • Advanced DIP principles,
  • The use of DIP processes in relevant specialised fields within MRS,
  • PACS,
  • Image display.
