NRS112 Essential Nursing Care: Valuing Health (8)

Students undertaking this subject will develop the ability to apply primary health care principles to their nursing practice. Students will explore concepts of health and wellness and develop health assessment skills that can be used in a broad range of health care contexts, with communities and clients across the lifespan. This subject will develop knowledge and skills necessary for safe practice, therapeutic communication, assessment and screening throughout the lifespan. Students will be introduced to concepts of culturally safe care; work, health and safety (WHS) and the legal implications of nursing care. Students will be introduced to a simulated clinical environment (including a 4 day residential school for students enrolled in distance education) to develop basic assessment skills.

Enrolment Restrictions

Only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing course and Bachelor of Nursing - Graduate Diploma of Clinical Practice (Paramedic).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use an evidence based health assessment framework to assess a patient's vital signs and history (aligns with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse: 1.2, 2.5, 4.1, 5.1, 5.2, 9.1, 9.2, 10.2).
  • be able to document patient assessment in a format which meets legal and organisational standards (NMBA 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 2.5, 6.3, 9.2, 9.5, 10.2, 10.3)
  • be able to define nursing terminology and use it in the correct context (NMBA 5.3, 6.3, 7.2, 7.7, 9.1, 9.2, 10.2).
  • be able to describe and explain appropriate patient centred communication strategies used in health care (NMBA 1.2, 2.5, 4.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.2, 7.7, 9.1, 9.2, 9.4, 9.5, 10.2, 10.3).
  • be able to describe and explain the variety of roles of members of the health care team (NMBA 1.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.7, 6.4, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3).

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1: Basic Nursing Care Skills and Assessment
  • Module 2: Work Health and Safety
  • Module 3: Health Priorities
  • Module 4: Leadership, decision making, communication

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

For first year students a residential school is designed to support their development of a relationship with the university and their lecturers. This will include tutorials and assessment of students through Clinical Skills Labs/Simulation. Development of physical skills through simulation is essential in the development of assessment skills.

Special Resources

Distance Education students will be required to travel to a residential school.
