The subject aims to develop the knowledge and skills of nurses to work effectively with Indigenous Australians to achieve significant improvements in contemporary Indigenous health. Students will be required to critically reflect upon the capacity of self and the profession to deliver culturally competent nursing practice. This will include analysis of contemporary health issues facing Indigenous Australians and the interrelationships between historical, social and political determinants of health. Students will focus on implications for nursing practice and will investigate best practice in culturally competent nursing practice in Indigenous health care.  Holistic health encompasses spirituality as well as the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of the individual and community.
