OCC103 Communication for Occupational Therapy Practice (8)

This subject develops occupational therapy relevant written and oral communication skills with an emphasis on the language used within health settings. Specific occupational therapy communication tasks and skills are addressed including interviewing skills, professional writing (written reports), and communicating with a range of people from diverse backgrounds and situations, and people who may have communication difficulties. Part of this subject will focus on communication skills relevant to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Part of this subject will also focus on developing the students' identity as occupational therapists.  A component of the subject includes 75 hours of supervised occupational therapy workplace learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to articulate and demonstrate their occupational therapy identity
  • be able to identify areas of strength in their communication skills
  • be able to identify areas for development and improvement of their communication skills
  • be able to develop strategies for improving their communication skills
  • be able to identify and implement occupational therapy relevant techniques for enhancing communication
  • be able to describe the impact of effective verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as miscommunication, and how this links to health outcomes
  • be able to identify and implement respectful communication skills relevant to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • be able to identify and implement occupational therapy techniques used in communicating with a broad range of people, including clients, families, and carers of clients, and other health professionals
  • be able to demonstrate a range of occupational therapy interviewing strategies, and develop a beginning understanding of counselling skills
  • be able to apply a range of strategies for delivering effective oral presentations and to write a professional occupational therapy report with supervision
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate communication skills and professional behaviour in a practice setting

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 10 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students are required to do a two-week full-time workplace learning placement to practice their communication, professional behaviour, and self-management skills under the supervision of a practicing occupational therapist.
